Comedy Screen Saver v1.0
For Win95 Marquee Screen Saver
By: Andrew Blevins
This simple program will spruce up your Win95 Marquee Screen Saver each
time you run Win95 by allowing you to change the scrolling text via a
text file of Comedy, Philosophy, Insults, Win95 Tips, or Short Poetry,
etc. each time you run Win95!
The following are the filenames that should be included in this archive:
COMICSS.DOC - This documentation file
COMICSS.EXE - The DOS executable file for use with Win95 Marquee
COMICSS.PIF - The Program Information File for COMICSS.EXE
COMICSS.DAT - A text file containing Sample comedy lines
COMICSS.TTF - Optional Comics font file to setup in Marquee for Win95
If you have experience with DOS and Windows, simply setup Scrolling Marquee
as your screen saver in Control Panel and be sure to adjust the features
through Setup of the Scrolling Marquee to update your CONTROL.INI file
and save, then copy the the .EXE, .PIF, and .DAT files to your C:\WINDOWS
directory and add COMICSS to the Load= line of the WIN.INI file and restart
Windows 95 to get COMICSS to change the text line in the screen saver. Then,
if you opt, add the COMICSS.TTF file through ADD FONTS in the Control Panel.
You should now please read the Programmer's Notes at the end of this doc!
Otherwise:
---------------------------------------------
SIMPLE SETUP FOR COMEDY SCREEN SAVER in WIN95
---------------------------------------------
Step 1
------
Click on START, click on SETUP, and from the menu click on CONTROL PANEL.
From the CONTROL PANEL click on DISPLAY. Click on SCREEN SAVER and then
choose from Screen Savers the Scrolling Marquee Screen Saver.
*If you do not have Scrolling Marquee in the list, use ADD/REMOVE programs
from the Win95 disk to add the Scrolling Marquee Screen Saver to your
Screen Savers listed under Accessories in the Add/Remove programs window.
Then click on SETTINGS and adjust the Position, Speed, Background Color
and Font to auto update your Win95 CONTROL.INI file, click on OK to exit.
Step 2
------
Copy or Move COMICSS.EXE, COMICSS.PIF, and COMICSS.DAT from where you
extracted this archive to your C:\WINDOWS directory (or the directory
from where you run your Windows 95 software) by using COPY in DOS or
by dragging the files onto C:\WINDOWS using the Windows Explorer.
Step 3
------
Edit your WIN.INI file in your C:\WINDOWS directory in either EDIT or
the Win95 NOTEPAD and add to the Load= line this program name COMICSS
and save the edited version of the WIN.INI file. [ie. Load=COMICSS]
*If you already have a program listed on the Load= line, such as
Load=POINTER, then simply append to the line a SPACE and then
type COMICSS. [ie. Load=POINTER COMICSS]
Step 4
------
To test the Comedy Screen Saver, simply run COMICSS in the C:\WINDOWS
directory to see if the program completes successfully by returning the
response: Added New Comedy to Win95 Screen Saver.Marquee!
OPTIONAL COMICS FONT
--------------------
If you don't already have the COMICS TWO font in your Win95 fonts,
simply click on Control Panel's Fonts Icon and from the FILE menu,
click on Install New Font and click on Comics Two (True Type) font
then OK to install Comics Two. Now you should be able to change the
font in Scrolling Marquee under Setup to Comics Two!
CHANGING THE TEXT!
------------------
The sample file (COMICSS.DAT) containing a compilation of Sniglets makes
a perfect load of comedy each day you run your Win95 system. But, if you
would like to create your own, simply edit the COMICSS.DAT file by using
DOS Edit or the Win95 Notepad.
*This file CANNOT HAVE MORE THAN 1000 lines and each line can be no
longer than 255 characters long!
Tip: Copy the current COMICSS.DAT file to COMICSS.001 and then create
a few other files and save them as COMICSS.002/.003/etc. and when you
want a different set of text lines, simply copy the COMICSS.001/.002/
etc. to COMICSS.DAT every few months. Additionally, if you would like
a different message to appear any certain day, simply load the preview
of the screen saver in the Control Panel and then click on START and
then on RUN and run the COMICSS.EXE file and then click on Control
Panel to see the next random message chosen until you see one you like.
PROGRAMMER'S NOTES:
Runs Smoothly:
This program should run smoothly in your Win95 environment, only showing
itself on the Taskbar for a second when booting into Win95. If for any
reason the program should fail to work properly it will stay on your
Taskbar or will not change the text of your Scrolling Marquee Saver.
Failure to Run:
If the program fails to run and stays on the Taskbar, simply click on
the program and read the error and then close the DOS window. If it
doesn't change your Marquee text, run the program in DOS or a separate
DOS window to read the text error reported.
CONTROL.INI file Concerns:
Since the program alters the CONTROL.INI file, be assured that after
running the program for the first time, a copy of your original
CONTROL.INI file will be saved as COMICSS.INI as a backup.
Removal of Software:
Removal of the software is simple since all of the files contained in
this archive are named COMICSS.??? which makes removal simple. You should
remember that COMICSS.TTF is part of your Win95 system and should be
removed via the Control Panel's FONT installation program!
DISCLAIMER
By accepting and using this software (COMICSS.EXE), you acknowledge that
this software may not suit your particular requirements or be completely
trouble free. Properly applied this program (COMICSS.EXE) should operate
without error. However, I am not liable for your specific application
